Lightning for Fusion
I’ve finally finished the lightning plugin for Fusion. It’s based on ActionScript code by Dan Florio. I don’t provide GUI controls for all variables though to keep things simple but there are some additions to make the plugin more useful for VFX shots.
For example, you can animate the lightning in a looping “wiggle” or crawling motion in addition to just randomizing the whole shape. Also, the direction of the lightning’s branches is biased towards the target point.

Der Lauf der Zeit
Gerade im Blog von Sehsucht auf die Fotografin Irina Werning aufmerksam geworden. In ihrer Serie “Back to the Future” stellt sie alte Fotos nach, und zwar mit den Originalpersonen und am gleichen Ort (bzw. vor gleicher Kulisse). Sie hat auch jedes mal den Look und die Vergilbung getreu nachgeahmt.
Dazu passt natürlich der Internet-Klassiker von Diego Goldberg. Bei seinem Projekt “The Arrow of Time” fotografiert er sich und seine Familie jedes Jahr am gleichen Tag im Passbild-Look. Und das schon seit 1976.
Womit wir den Dreisprung geschafft hätten. Das Musikvideo des One-Hit-Wonders und Radio-Evergreens “74-75” der Connells, stellt die Schüler eines High-School Jahrgangs Jahrzehnte später ihren damaligen Year-Book-Fotos gegenüber.

Geplante Obsoleszenz
Glühbirnen, Nylonstrümpfe, Drucker, Mobiltelefone — bei den meisten dieser Produkte ist das Abnutzungsdatum bereits geplant. Die Verbraucher sollen veranlasst werden, lieber einen neuen Artikel zu kaufen, als den defekten reparieren zu lassen. Die bewusste Verkürzung der Lebensdauer eines Industrieerzeugnisses, um die Wirtschaft in Schwung zu halten, nennt man “geplante Obsoleszenz”.

Moby Dick
Last year, I worked on some VFX shots for an adaptation of Moby Dick, a TV mini series starring Ethan Hawke and Gillian Anderson (not as Captain Ahab and the whale though). No release date has been set yet, but a trailer is up on YouTube already (the action doesn’t start until 1:30):

The company that is responsible for hilariously bad films like “Mega Piranha” have jumped on the bandwagon again and have made their own adaptation. Judging by the trailer, however, this spoof looks like a waste of time, while Mega Piranha was at least entertainment of the “so-bad-it’s-good” variety.
